Earlier this year, Momentum was named a finalist for VIATEC’s Technology Company of the Year (1-10 employees) Award. Last Friday, the Momentum team attended the yearly awards night. Here’s a recap from the evening:

What is VIATEC?

VIATEC (Victoria Innovation, Advanced Technology and Entrepreneurship Council) connects and celebrates people and companies within the Greater Victoria technology sector. Every year, VIATEC hosts an awards night to celebrate growth, innovation and community contribution. This year’s theme was Tiki Time Machine and our team dressed to impress.

A chance to socialize

With over 800 people in attendance, there was no shortage of people to talk to! In such a busy tech sector, it’s sometimes difficult to actually meet people outside your immediate team. Friday’s event gave us the opportunity to connect and chat with influencers and thought leaders in our community and check out some of the dynamic and amazing talent living and working in our little city.

A little creative fun

Before dinner, each table was given a creative challenge. We had to design a centerpiece in eight minutes using a pineapple, a string of lights, and a small envelope of supplies. We could bring extra materials from home but we had to refrain from using glue, glitter, confetti, or fire. Winner received a round of drinks for the table.

We decided to transform our pineapple into a rocket ship, complete with a launch pad illuminated by glow sticks and playdough astronauts. Although we didn’t win (it was hard to compete with an inflatable pool exhibit the size of the table), we had a great time working as a team to bring our rocket to life.

And the award goes to…

The awards ceremony featured some of the best and brightest in Victoria, BC tech. Some of the 17 award categories included Startup of the Year, Leader of the Year, Innovative Excellence, and Technology Company of the Year. Momentum was nominated for Technology Company of the Year (1-10 employees), sponsored by Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP.

Even though we were up against some pretty stiff competition (Iris Dynamics Ltd. and Silkstart), Momentum took home the coveted Freddy trophy.

Oh, what a night

With our newest team member in tow, we headed on over to the after party for a couple cocktails and a copious amount of high fives.
